Women In Lindsay Businesses - Chris Houle

We are celebrating Women In Business in our beautiful Downtown Lindsay!

Chris Houle is part owner of Iceman Video Games with her husband, Gary Butler. Their location has been in our downtown for 15 years. Chris has been in the gaming industry for almost 30 years, having run stores in Toronto previously.

Chris loves the very friendly hometown feel that Lindsay offers. It is a great place to raise a family – she and Gary raised their daughter, Holly, here since she was in Grade 7. She couldn’t get over how welcoming everyone in the community was when they first opened, willing to help and support another local downtown independent business. Their customers and the other neighbouring business owners have always been friendly and supportive.

Video games are another realm of retail that has been male-dominated for decades. The customer demographic is still primarily 17-35 year old males. It is great to see that the gaming industry is appealing to female players nowadays, which has been an untapped market for the longest time. Now the women who grew up on video games, are becoming game developers, creating female protagonists who appeal to females and males. See the thing is, females are the best shoppers. We are. It’s just a fact. The gaming industry is starting to realize that, benefiting the customers and businesses.

Chris and Gary have had great success with their Lindsay store location on Kent Street, and therefore, opened their second location in Peterborough at George and Hunter. Their daughter, Holly, worked in the Lindsay location for many years. She attended Trent University, achieving a BA in Business. She runs Ice Man’s Peterborough store, and is using her skill sets that she acquired through her education. She is another great example of a female taking the lead in the gaming industry.

Thank you Chris for representing successful female entrepreneurs, especially in a male-dominated industry, and raising a powerful young female business owner with Gary. We wish you continued success and longevity!
